Van Niekerk was born in Cape Town. He attended Grey College before going on to study marketing at University of the Free State. He made his international debut at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics , where he placed fourth in the 200 m with a personal best time of 21.02 seconds. He also ran in the 4×100 metres relay heats with the national team, alongside Gideon Trotter. His senior breakthrough came at the age of eighteen at the 2011 South African Athletics Championships when he won the 200 m title in a new personal best of 20.57 seconds. He competed at that event at the 2011 African Junio Athletics Championships, but did not make the final. He ran sparingly in 2012, but began to show a talent for the 400 metres, setting a best of 46.43 seconds

Wayde Van Niekerk is of Aborigines heritage. He grew up in South Africa and always showed a promising athletic career. His parents are Odessa Swarts and Wayne van Niekerk.
Wayde van Niekerk is 24 years old. He has been sprinting all over the world and dominating at 400M. He won the 2015 World Championships and was a favorite entering the 2016 Rio Games.
He’s one of the most in demand runners in his entire continent. Easily a local celebrity but his brand will only grow after winning a gold medal.
400M World Record – Rio 2016
Van Niekerk was assigned lane 8 in the finals of the 2016 Rio 400M. He had stiff competition from the past Olympic champions at this distant. He led the entire race and was sprinting down the final straightaway into the record books with a time of 43.03.
This runner is one to watch in the future. Michael Johnson was in attendance to watch his 20 year old record broken. It was one of the greatest runs by any sprinter ever.
